Peter Robert Keil was born in 1942 to two artistically talented parents. After the loss of his father at a very young age, he and his mother migrated to West Berlin. He grew up in the working-class Berlin-Wedding District when at the age of ten, he discovered his passion for painting. He was specifically interested in the Expressionistic works of artists like Pablo Picasso. As his studies progressed from the University of Arts in Berlin to Paris, London, and Spain, he developed relationships with influential artists of his generation like Rainer Fetting and Salomé, Georg Baselitz, Eugen Schönebeck, Markus Lüpertz and Joachim Schmettau, Otto Nagel, and also Joan Miró, Picasso, Warhol, Basquiat, and even David Bowie.

Many people ask the question: “How did this wonderful collection of Peter Keil’s work land in Waco, Texas?”
The answer is simple. Jill Barrett, owner of Falcon & Owl Antique Store, and Jill Barrett Fine Art Reserve grew up in a family context that always appreciated and prioritized art and antiques in the home. Therefore, when she first encountered Peter's art at the Roundtop Antique Show where she was a dealer, it stopped her in her tracks. Even more enticing to Jill was the approachable price points and the wide variety of pricing options available, inviting anyone interested to begin a collection. What first started with five paintings at her booth at Marburger Farm Antique Show, has turned into a beautiful, long-term relationship with Peter Keil's art and the Keil Family's Private Collection. As the exclusive Texas dealer of the Keil Collection, Jill Barrett alongside Benjamin Keil has opened a beautiful antique showroom and art gallery in downtown Waco.
From conversations with Martin Breuninge and Peter Keil at the Keil Collection Heidelberg, we learned that Peter entered a very formative phase of his artistic identity in the context of the Neue Wilde (New Wild) or Heftige Malerei (Wild Painting); he developed his own version of Expressionist painting depicted by wild brushstrokes and bold colors. It was also here that Keil developed a characteristically pictorial language that was conveyed by a duality between color and lines. Large-scale, freely gestural color application alternates with graphic structures, dynamically drawn lines and sweeping black outlines that define the visual context. The often violently moving style, the deliberate dissolution of the “real” image into a primitive, coarse mode of representation are similar to the ideas of the Cobra group or Art Brut. The distortion of motifs through collage, elements of writing, graffiti, and other experimental interventions in Keil's works also exemplify the style of Jean-Michel Basquiat. In the overall view of Keil's body of work, there are certain themes that reoccur often and therefore may be regarded as relevant: themes of his own emotional state and reactions to social developments or dream scenarios. He often paints distorted or exaggerated pictorials of all kinds of people he has met—from societal outcasts to famous actors, artists, politicians and producers. And always, he turns his gaze to the female body and the relationship between man and woman.
Peter Robert Keil's creativity has been unbroken since his early youth, and he now looks back on a creative period of 60-plus years, producing an opulent body of work. The highly collectable work of Peter Keil can be found at art exhibitions, museums, galleries and private collections of celebrities and major art collectors throughout the world. His work is seen in high-end luxury hotels as well as some of the leading auction houses in Europe. And, though Keil is a prolific internationally recognized artist, he offers a special direct-from-artist pricing to American galleries and collectors who are interested in pieces from his private collection of work—past and present. It is very important to Peter that his work remains approachable from a pricing standpoint. The diversity of his work not only allows anyone to dive in but encourages many to become "collectors.” And, this is the goal.
